Taste And Judgment For An Evolving Economy: The University’s Role

The Peregrine Collective hosted a salon on the role of the university in preparing people for an evolving economy amidst AI disruption. We convened an interdisciplinary group of stakeholders across academia and technology who will explore how the structures and incentives of higher education correspond to the skills necessary to confront a dynamic economy and foster our unique human capabilities.

By discerning the priorities of universities — from the pursuit of truth to individual formation to returns to society — we gained clarity on how it can properly respond to changes brought by AI and further democratic values and the common good. We heard from Deb Donig, Lecturer in the School of Information at UC Berkeley, on her thoughts on how to integrate humanistic thinking with the vocational aim of universities and Will Fithian, Associate Professor of Statistics at UC Berkeley, on where he thinks AI is most disrupting current educational incentives and how we should respond.
